Seasonal crafting with kids is one of my favourite things to do.  Simple creations, using lots of imagination and together time are some of the best memories you can make – like with these apple face dolls!

When I was in public school I made an Apple Face Doll.

I remember being so proud of carving it myself, and checking on it each day to watch it age.

Such a simple craft, that left such a lasting impression – you know I had to try making apple face dolls with my girls.

We had a couple of apples left over from our pie making, and they were getting a bit ‘ripe’, so they were our victims.

Don’t worry, she’s not going as fast as it seems and the knife is relatively dull.
You really don’t need a sharp knife when the apples are soft.

After carving we did soak them in a lemon juice and salt bath to help hold-off the browning.

I wonder if using a small melon baller would have made scooping out eyes a bit easier?  I added a couple of wrinkles underneath the eyes to make sure that my apple face doll ended up looking good and wrinkly. lolApple face doll, apple face dolls, apple faces

They’re coming!

I had to post this before we had the complete transformation because I didn’t want to miss apple season.

They take quite a while to age. (?)
Funny, when I have them sitting out in a basket to be eaten, they seem to over-ripen overnight?

I’m kind of curious now as to whether pre-microwaving them, or even baking maybe, might have removed the juices to get the ‘aging’ process moving faster?  OH!  Or what about a dehydrator?

I’m going to have to try making apple face dolls again so I can test out the theories!

This is how they should end up eventually.

Have a great one!
