In this one instance I’m going to recommend that DIYing your Christmas window box *might be more expensive than picking up a few pre-made ones from your local nursery.  Just glam it up with berries, picks and ribbons when you get home and save a ton of money.

My tree is up!

Not decorated yet, but it’s so beautiful in all its sparkly-light-ness, that I might just enjoy it bare for a couple of weeks before deciding on a colour scheme.

Or I might do it tomorrow.

I love Christmas and pair that with a complete lack of self control, my impulsivity knows no bounds! 😂

I do however believe in getting your outside decorating done before it gets REALLY cold.  We had our first snow last Thursday, and while it melted during the day, the night time temperatures are dipping below freezing.  Not at all ideal if you plan on climbing a ladder – say for a window box that is about 20′ off the ground?

I decided to hit my favourite local nursery and check out the pricing on fresh winter greens to make my Christmas window boxes this weekend.

I don’t mean to be a cheapskate, but evergreen branches are crazy expensive!  $10 for a small bunch that wouldn’t have covered even 1 square foot of my 6 foot window box.  In this case, I will encourage you to buy pre-made and not DIY yourself (unless you have access to a forest where you can forage your own).

I picked up three pre-made window boxes at 24″ long each and then laid a board across my window box arms to rest them on.

You can see the board in the above photo, but in the next few you’ll see I painted it black so that it wasn’t as obvious.

I brought out my birdhouse from last year and rested it on a block between the pre-made Christmas window boxes so create more length to the display.  It’s not fancy, but with a few branches here and there, it’s barely noticeable.

I saved a few dollars by purchasing window boxes that only held evergreen boughs – no embellishments or picks – and then tucked a few faux berry branches in here and there for a shot of colour.

In the above photo you can see at least 3 different types of branches – but I believe there are actually 4 types.  That’s $40 just for branches if I had DIY’d this project. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m quite confident it wouldn’t have turned out this lush and pretty if I’d only spent $40 – so purchasing pre-made was definitely a money saver for me.

After tucking a few branches underneath the birdhouse and adding ribbon to the top, it looks like one continuous Christmas window box display.

After the Holidays, I’ll just remove the ribbon and the Christmas window boxes will last until Spring as Winter window boxes!

I did pick up a third to replace the window box above my garage.  I know it’s not proportionate to the window, but saving money doesn’t mean I didn’t spend any – and a 4th would have just been too much.

My garage planters hold cedars, so there’s no need to change those out  – I just added big birch bows and done!

Christmas window boxes done!

Have a great one!
