I am in the home stretch of a room makeover for my tween daughter!  The past week has been about updating her room from hot pink to white – including changing out the caulking on the window, painting all the trim, sanding damage out of the walls and now (finally) decorating.

I’m not sure why Miss Madison decided on white – but now that it’s all coming together, I have to admit that the kid has taste.  It’s looking really great (I promise to show you eventually, but I want to wait until her blinds are in).

Yesterday’s to-do for the tween bedroom was a cork board makeover which stemmed from this gorgeous piece by Landeelu.com:

I won’t steal her tutorial – all the talent and complete instructions are available on her blog here, so please click over and send her some love.

I will say that, in my case anyways, it was cheaper to buy a cork board than to create my own from pieces.  That being said, my cork board makeover was not as easy as her tutorial because of it being one solid piece and not separate squares, (which meant finding centres, measuring spacing and a LOT of taping.)

If I had gone with four pieces of cork and then framed it up with a 1×2″ board I was looking at about $35.  I found this cork board in the same section of Lowes, but he came in at $17 – so it just made cents.  (see what I did there? lol)

Taping each section for the cork board makeover was a bit of a challenge – my brain just couldn’t grasp outlining each area and I had to place and then re-place my painter’s tape a few times to get it right.  In the end I used about half a roll and still ended up hand painting here and there.

I used leftover paint for the entire board, so there was no extra cost that way. Yes, I have quite the stash of colours at this point – Damn you mis-tint bin!

Not too bad eh?

My lines aren’t perfectly straight but it is a cork board, so chances are most of it will be covered with notes and photos and then it will look as perfect as Landeelu’s.

It’s pretty striking against the white walls and adds just that pop of colour to take her room from blank to BLAM!

She squealed when she came home from school and saw it, so I’m going to take that as tween for “You’re the best Mom in the universe” – or at least as an “I love it”, but I prefer the first interpretation.

Thank you Landeelu for the inspiration and the tutorial.

Have a great one!
