Celebrate any victory with a simple dollar store award – like this cornhole trophy I made for a friend.
Popping in with a quick post today. So quick in fact, that I didn’t even think to take progress photos to show you how I made it. 🤦🏻♀️
Regardless, it turned out pretty cute and took no time to make, so I thought I’d share the finished photos so you can replicate it.
My friend wanted a cornhole trophy and asked if I could whip something up for him within 2 days.
He had envisioned a piece of wood with a large hole in it and a piece of corn poking through. LOVE IT!
But, and I was completely shocked by this, I could not find Indian corn anywhere?! Real corn would have rotted too quickly so a dried corn was really the only option to make his vision come to life.
I tried Michael’s, Farm Boy, Dollar Store (thinking I’d even take a plastic one off of a wreath), Jysk, Winners… not one anywhere.
So I changed it up a bit and made a tiny little cornhole board out of some scrap ply I had in the garage.
I stained the ply in special walnut stain, added a coat of Varathane triple-thick and when all of that was dry, I painted on the navy directional triangle onto the cornhole board.
What I did find at the dollar store was this plastic trophy and a set of wooden letters – so my search was not entirely in vain.
I removed the bottom section of the trophy and used gorilla glue clear to adhere it to the mini cornhole base.
The letters were just glued on with Tombow glue (which dries clear).
That’s it guys – a bit of scrap wood, some leftover paint and stain and a couple of dollar store items!
The cornhole trophy looks so much more impressive against a navy backdrop doesn’t it?
As if it was a legitimate award on display in your office? (Instead of a plastic acknowledgement for drunken weekend antics 😂)
I hope it was a hit and the winner of the cornhole trophy displays it with pride of accomplishment. 😂
