DIY Coat Rack

Do you know what this is?

Okay, that was a stupid question – the blog title clearly tells you what it is – but would have guessed a DIY coat stand just by the photo?

I wouldn’t have, mainly because these bits and bobs of scrap wood don’t match – we have some 2×4’s in pine, a couple in pressure treated, a cedar 4×4 and some scrap squares.  I would never think that this hodgepodge pile would become something like this;

Yup, the amazing gals at Shanty 2 Chic have done it again with a super-easy DIY project to get your home ready for Holiday guests.  Click any of the images to be taken to the building plans.

I’m going to show you how I pieced my DIY coat rack together from (mainly) scrap wood, only purchasing a 4×4, and two fence toppers.

The feet are attached to your 4×4 post with KregJig pocket holes.  You add your feet to the bottom of each base piece, mark the height on your 4×4 post and then pre-drill your holes to attach.

You don’t have to buy fence toppers if you don’t want – the top of your DIY coat rack could be used to hold hats and no one would ever notice the square top… but if you want a little “extra” these two turned out pretty well together.

The angled braces can be swapped out for fancy metal or wood cornice pieces if you like.

I went with a single coat of grey (since almost everything in my house is now grey) and it turned out beautifully!

Because my 4×4 post is cedar, it’s relatively light so my DIY coat rack can easily be moved around to hold jackets and backpacks after school,

to winter coats from guests, to cozy bathrobes for hot tubbing.

The 4×4 came in at $24 (Cdn), the fence toppers were $1.68 and $4.87 and the hooks were in a 7 pack (that I split with my DIY mug stand) that came to $11.

For a grand total of maybe two hours time and $41.55 my family (and any Holiday guests) now have a place to hang their hat!
