I’ve been puttering in the garage lately trying to come up with some simple scrap wood projects that would be both interesting to you, my readers, and useful to my family….
Did you know that there are an estimated 78 million dogs in the U.S.? The statistics suggest that 44% of Americans own at least one dog. (In Canada it is estimated that 35% of the population own a dog)
We have a dog – my gentle Lacey Mae – and I have a hook and I have scrap wood and I need a place to keep her leather dog collars corralled… and roughly 44% of you might find this interesting.

DIY leash holder
I cut some scrap ¾” plywood down to 5 ½” by 9½” and sanded it smooth.
I painted the board in an off-white and while it was drying I brought out my scroll saw and cut out a cute puppy-paw. If you are making this, make sure you place your hook on your board (before painting) and decide how much space you’ll have leftover for your paw – in this case, I cut the paw to fit a 4 ½” space.
If you don’t have a scroll saw, you can cut your paw from adhesive vinyl on a cutting machine, or hand paint one on the board face – a paw doesn’t require a ton of artistic talent so anyone can do it.
Personally (and because I do have a scroll saw) I loved the idea of having a paw that sat out from the board.
I did add a coat of varnish to the DIY leash holder to protect the off-white surface from scuffs – but it’s an extra step that you don’t have to do.
I used Gorilla Glue to attach the paw and pads in place and then screwed my Liberty hook on below it.
We don’t have a front hall closet, so I attached Lacey’s DIY leash holder to the outside of our storage cubby at the front door with 1 ¼” wood screws. It’s kind of like a little piece of art isn’t it?
You could hang another by the garage door, or on the back of a closet door.
It doesn’t have to be a paw print either – this simple DIY leash holder could end up being personalized for kids’ backpacks or for specific sports.
