This is going to be a short post today – I mean, what more can I say than “drawer shelf” for you to know the entirety of the project?

I’ve had this drawer sitting in my garage for months.  I was going to make a butler’s table, I was going to use it for a small herb garden, I was going to use it to store pillows or a couple of blankets…  but I never got around to any of those.

While working on the girls treehouse makeover – aka “Tweening up the treehouse” I got to thinking about what it was that made a fort ‘cool’ when I was a kid…

it  was:

  1. that it was mine
  2. that it was a private hangout/hideout
  3. that it was decorated or set up like a ‘real’ home

That’s when I decided to repurpose this old drawer into a shelf to decorate the playhouse.

I used a couple of coats of BM’s colour of the year – Shadow – in an exterior grade paint.

I also gave it a coat of outdoor sealer to help prolong it’s life.

I hung the drawer shelf with the knob hole at the bottom – just in case water does get in, it will be able to drain out.  See – no work at all here – the hole is already there!

I screwed the back (formerly the bottom) of the drawer directly to the playground.  If you are planning to house anything heavy in your drawer shelf, you might want to use l-brackets underneath as well.

The kids decorated it with treats and flowers:

Simple, decorative, functional and another item saved from landfill!

Treehouse progressing nicely – but there’s more still to come!

Have a great one!

Too funny

    1. No, the drawer face was almost flush with the bottom of the drawer so I didn’t need to. For added rigidity/stability, you could slide some scrap wood behind the drawer bottom (back) before attaching to the wall – then you wouldn’t have to futz with cutting the drawer front.
