Embroidery Floss Tassels

Create these simple embroidery floss tassels in a matter of minutes and attach them to pillows, keychains, earrings – anything at all really.

Winter has finally hit in my part of SW Ontario and it’s been C-O-L-D. A bit of snow, but plenty of cold.

Which means it’s been a bit too much for my tiny garage heaters to overcome and shop time has been limited.

I’m not one to sit around, so I brought out some long-held craft supplies to see what I could come up with inside the house.

I picked up a big bag of embroidery floss at a garage sale a few years ago. My thought was that I would show the girls how to make those knotted friendship bracelets that I used to make as a kid. Turns out neither child had the patience or attention span, so all of this has sat tucked away in my craft room.

I’ve seen different tassel projects online – tassel earrings, tassel garland, tasselled pillows and baskets – so I wanted to see if they were as easy to make as they seemed.

I chose three colours that I thought went well together and purchased some split rings to create these simple tassel keychains.

I cut a length of embroidery floss that was about 4x the length of the bundle and set it aside.

I found the centre of the floss bundles (folded in half) and tied a small length of string tightly around it. (not shown) I then put the three bundles of embroidery floss through the keychain ring and folded them in half evenly through it.

I used the cut length of thread to wrap the embroidery floss keychain at the neck. Pull it tightly and tie a tight knot when you’re done.

Cut the loops at the end and make sure the ends of your tassel are even and you are done!

Craft stores sell earring parts that you could make embroidery floss tassels for – and create those cute and trendy tassel earrings. Attach a tassel to your purse, use as a keychain or stitch to the corners of throw pillows.

Because I’d planned on making keychains, I stuck with darker colours of embroidery floss. Ones that won’t show as much dirt after being tucked in and out of a purse or pocket and won’t show grunge from dirty hands.

You can definitely make these embroidery thread keychains with just one spool of floss, but I wanted something a bit more substantial and puffy.

If you have a mess of thread like this:

Cut a piece of cardboard that is roughly the length of one bundle of floss and wrap the thread around and around. Remove from the cardboard, tie in the middle and follow the same steps. It will make that cute multi-coloured keychain you see near the middle.

I will warn you, the floss can get caught on the split ring when you are threading your keys, so don’t tug. The initial knot we made before wrapping around the keychain will help a bit, but it can be a bit futzy. Worst case, attach this keychain to an existing keychain for a more dangly fob and less ring work.

Wow – that went bad quickly. lol

These embroidery floss tassels are so easy to make that I got a bit carried away…

So I took several over to my daughters’ school to shamelessly self-promote gift to the front office staff.

I can see embroidery floss tassels ending up on my throw pillows at some point – if this freezing weather holds, maybe sooner than later. If you wanted more embroidery ideas check out Easter Embroidery Designs.

Stay warm and go use up some craft supplies – that’s what Winter is for!

Have a great one!
