Fall Decor - Scrap wood pumpkin

Remember the other day when I was showing you my scrap wood crows?

In the background you might have noticed another project I was plugging away at; a scrap wood pumpkin.

I had a scrap piece of 2 x 6″ that was about 6″ long – so I traced out a pumpkin shape on it and cut it with my Bladerunner X2. I cut a second piece of wood, which was only about 3/4″ thick into an oval-ish shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just roughly the height of your scrap wood pumpkin.

I wanted my scrap wood pumpkin to have a distressed / rustic look, but I wanted green to show through instead of wood, so I painted both the pumpkin and the ‘bulge’ in a very pale green.

Once that was dry, I painted over it with an-off white. You can buy tester pots of paint for $4 if you want specific shades but really, you could get away with mixing any old paint with a white to give you a gradation.

Once your scrap wood pumpkin is completely dry, glue the ‘bulge’ to the front of it and lightly sand to bring out the colour underneath.

I wrapped a small bit of hemp twine around the stem to complete the look.

This little guy is so cute – and so easy! I may need to go back and make a couple more in different sizes.

Drill a hole in the stem and insert a taper candle. Drill a few holes and use it to hold pencils. Add a dowel to the bottom and make a plant pick. Paint it orange and add a jack-o-lantern face.

Above all, be proud that you made a one-of-a-kind piece of Fall decor without having to buy a single thing (if you have white paint that is – if not, yours might have cost $4).
