Felt Flowers

I was surfing Instagram the other day and I came across a photo from @GoldenAfterNoonShop – a fabric florist shop that sells felt flower bouquets, wreaths, planters etc.

Her work is gorgeous, so if you aren’t a DIYer, you should really order from her.

I’m a DIYer. I always want to try the things I see online to see if I can make some version of it myself, and felt flowers didn’t seem like they would be all that difficult a project.

I started by building these little wood planters from some scrap wood I had in the garage. These are 3 ¼” wide and tall (the shorter is about half that height) and are held together with wood glue and a couple of finishing nails.

I had some floral foam that I pulled out of my winter urns, so I cut a couple of pieces to fit inside my little wood planters so that I had a nice base to tuck my felt flowers in to.

To create a little rosette / ranunculus looking flower, you’ll want to cut a circle from your felt.

Starting from the outside of your circle, cut a spiral inwards until you reach the centre. Try to make your cuts equally spaced.

I used a toothpick as the base for my felt flowers, but you don’t have to; the build is the same either way. With a dab of hot glue, roll the centre of your spiral over itself.

Continue rolling the spiral around your centre placing a drop of hot glue here and there to hold everything in place. The key is to keep the bottom of your flower flat.

Add a drop of glue to the tip of your spiral and you are done!

I cut a few leaves out of green felt and hot glued them to the flowers to finish them off.

Ridonculously easy right?!

The next one, I’ll call a felt mum, is even easier!

Cut a strip of felt and cut little notches into one side from end to end.

With or without a toothpick as your centre, add a dab of hot glue and start rolling the un-cut edge around itself.

Add a bit of hot glue here and there to hold it in place and fluff your mum when done.

I made tiny mums for my little thank you bouquet, but you could cut your strip of felt wide and long and make giant mums if you like.

I found a few other flower tutorials online and completed my felt flower bouquets by tucking the toothpicks into my floral foam.

Use your felt flowers to create a little broach, or hot glue to a hair clip or hair band.

I added a few details to my felt flowers by just dabbing and/or dusting with a regular marker. Create a vein in a leaf, or shadows in the centres of your felt flowers.
