Last week we were on a road trip up to a friend’s cottage about 2.5 hours away.

The girls are always good in the car and other than the occasional pit-stop for a potty break, they happily entertain themselves by playing or watching their iPads.

BUT
little did we know that this time we were bringing them home ill.
Madison had a fever the day before we left, but it seemed to pass and she was in good spirits.  Chloe didn’t complain about anything at all – until she emptied on the way home.

Thank goodness she warned us and we were able to pull over – I think part of the problem was this Hand, foot and mouth virus and the other part was looking down at her iPad in her lap.

I know I can’t drive and look down without feeling ill.

I found this tutorial on Pinterest and decided to whip a couple up ready for our next adventure.

You will need:

  • thick elastic – the tutorial suggests 1″ width. (2.5cm)
  • a thinner elastic – again the tutorial suggests 1/4″ (0.6cm)
  • a fat quarter of fabric and
  • stiff cardboard.  If you use cereal box cardboard, you will need about 3 layers of it.

Some of these photos may be a bit misleading – I didn’t have 1″ elastic or 1/4″, so I used what I had on hand.
Also, I made one for each girl, so some photos will show more pieces than you need for a single one.

Directions:

Cut your cardboard down to 9 1/2″ by 7″  (24cm by 17.75cm) – you’ll need 1 piece.
Cut your thicker elastic to 15″ long (38cm) – 1 piece
Cut your thinner elastic to 3″ long (7.6cm) – you’ll need 2 pieces

Cut two pieces of fabric at 10″ by 8″ (25.4cm by 20.3cm)
Cut two smaller pieces at 3 1/2″ square (~9cm)

Fold your two small squares in half as below, then press.

Right sides facing up on both the large piece and the triangles, sew along the edges in the bottom corners of the larger fabric.

Mark 2″ (5.1cm) in from the top corner and down from the same corner – see circles in the photo.

Sew the thinner elastic pieces to the top corners, lining up with the marks you just made.
Sew across the elastic (where the arrows are).

Find the centre of the large piece of fabric (on the 8″ side) and sew the wider elastic in place on both sides. (where arrows are).  This is going to carry the weight so be sure to reinforce the stitches.

Place remaining piece of fabric over top of what you’ve just sewn – right sides together – and sew around the outer edge on three sides.
Leave the bottom edge open.

Turn right side out and press.

Fold under a 1/4″ hem and press into place.

Stuff the cardboard into the sleeve you’ve just created.
It should be a perfect fit, with a little extra at the bottom for the final seam.

Sew across the pressed seam with the sewing machine, or for a cleaner finish, by hand to close the pocket up.

Insert your iPad into the corner pockets and pull top elastics over.
Wrap the large elastic around your headrest and you’re ready to go!

Thank you Infarrantly Creative!

When you’re not on a road trip, the cardboard piece can just hang in the car – it’s not in the way and it will be readily available when you hit the road again!
