Today’s final reveal day for the One Room Challenge and I’m so excited to show off my new space!

One Room Challenge - Fall 2017, ORC week 2, One room challenge week 2

But before I do, and for dramatic effect, let me remind you what the room looked like before:

This was Hubby’s sty office and it was ALWAYS messy.

The office is right off of the front door, so it was a room you’d see as soon as you walked in – and it MADE ME CRAZY!

So, after 12 years of cleaning, organizing, begging, cajoling and nagging – I decided to take it over for myself.

I created a style board with some hopes and wishes for how I’d like my new space to look:

My goal was to make this room work triple-time as a home office, a craft room and as a little sanctuary where I could hide away. I even dabbled with the idea of making it look like a london office space, somewhere you can concentrate and relax.

Big asks for a little 10′ by 10′ room right?

I also needed to do it on a budget.

Yikes!

My biggest expenditure was for my chair from Pier 1 – but I purchased the floor model, so I did save a few bucks.

I’ve hidden away in here with my cozy throw, a cup of tea and my feet up on my desk chair while I stream Netflix on my computer.

It’s just heavenly!

Please pretend you don’t notice the blinds or the carpet – they were out-of-budget for now, but WILL be done in 2018.

Before this home office takeover/makeover, I had my mirrored desk (a $10 desk that I added mirrors to) in a corner of my bedroom, and all of my crafting supplies were housed in a studio in the basement.

Not conducive to efficiency. Having everything in one organized area has made working such a treat.

I share my desk chair between the two work surfaces and roll back and forth as needed.

I did a giant purge, and then purged once more after that, to filter my necessities down to only what I use regularly.

I built some drawer organizers out of scrap plywood to make better use of the drawer space in my desk:

and in my refinished cabinets:

My shelving was decorated with things I love, while still keeping supplies close-at-hand for easy access.

I didn’t purchase any decor items for my home office makeover (except a small bunch of flowers) and instead shopped my house for items that would coordinate.

I had no idea I had pretty things? lol

I’ve got a great pair pear don’t I?

Ten feet by 10 feet is not a giant space to work with – but I couldn’t be more thrilled with how I was able to create a triple-threat room; crafting space, home office and “nook”.

It’s fresh, it’s crisp (it’s clean), it’s feminine… I’ve seen some great photo prints online but I haven’t got round to buying one yet. I think it would tie the room together perfectly. Check it out at Bumblejax!

Home Office Makeover Budget:

Total: $756 (more than I’d planned to spend, but the chair is so gorgeous!)

I’m going to spend the next hour (or two) sitting in that cozy chair scrolling through all of the other Guest Participants in the One Room Challenge Fall 2017 – click over and check out all the transformations.

I’m already planning out my Spring 2018 One Room Challenge – this was a lot of work, but it was great to have a concrete deadline to get a project done and I had so much fun doing it!

Thank you House Beautiful Magazine and Calling it Home for hosting/sponsoring a fantastic event.

Have a great one!

  1. I AM IN LOOOVE with what you’ve done to your room! I have been trying to carefully plan my future craft room for 2 years. Ive ponderd many ideas, (for what feels like forever) but nothing has ever felt right…Until I saw your room! Mary, you took the words right out of my mouth and I couldn’t have said it better myself. IT IS A DREAM! I especially love your craft desk. It’s exactly what I’ve been imagining, but couldn’t quite express! Could u tell me more about it?! Also, I love how u made this room a 3 in 1. You pulled everything together so beautifully …amazing job!
I can’t wait to see what u do for Spring 2018 One Room Challenge!

  2. This is beautiful! Would love to know where you got the storage drawers, and the supports for the work top. Also, what countertop is that?
