A kitchen makeover is on most homeowner’s wish lists, but it’s usually a long-term goal because a complete overhaul is cost prohibitive, invasive and very, very time consuming.  Today I’m showing kitchen makeovers that can be DIY’d or hired out at a fraction of the cost and time.

Do you love seeing before and after images of the difference a bit of paint can make?

I do.

I SO do.

It gives me the feeling of fresh starts on a crisp, clean canvas, where an entire room can have a completely different vibe without spending a million dollars.

I love it in bedrooms, dining rooms, family rooms – but especially images of kitchen makeovers.

Mainly because it’s a BIG JOB – and one not many tackle themselves because it’s a big time commitment and the fear of screwing up is real.

I did tackle my own “Kitchen Makeover on a Budget” last year with the help of Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformations and it is holding up incredibly well – but it was a big leap of faith to try it, and not a small project to see through.

Today I have permission from Better Than New to showcase a few of her transformations – and while I didn’t work with Michelle on my kitchen – I couldn’t help but drool over the kitchen makeovers she’s tackled.

The old kitchen had your typical 1980’s oak cabinets – which were/are crazy-expensive and not something you want to replace if you don’t have to.

Fortunately, the cabinets were a traditional shaker style, so this kitchen makeover needed nothing more than a coat of paint to update it.

Look at that live edge counter guys!!  (swoon)

The above kitchen makeover wasn’t as obvious to me – I mean the off-white cabinets still looked okay right?

Until I saw the after photo and realized how dark the space was with the dark counters and heavy backsplash.

Bringing in a fresh white palette with the gorgeous navy island (and those beautiful bar stools!) really took the space to crisp and current.

Speaking of islands, sometimes all you need is an update to an accent area – like with this kitchen island makeover.  Better Than New added trim work to upgrade the builder’s basic island, then updated it with a warm neutral to keep it cohesive with the existing counter and hardware.

I think this kitchen makeover is my favourite – I love the double windows – reminds me of my Uncle’s house for some reason.

We’re looking at oak cupboards again here – so a very high quality kitchen that would be insanely priced to replace.

Michelle updated the cabinets and trim to a warm white to keep things light and airy, but was still able to maintain the backsplash and all of the hardware.

Now the appliances blend in seamlessly and the counter is the accent without being heavy.

A brand new kitchen at a fraction of the price!
