Remember my Fall tablescape from last week?

I promised I’d show you how we made the super-simple decorative metal tray, and today’s the day!

M-D Building Products sell sheets of metal – aluminum, brushed nickle, copper, gold, black, in solid sheets and patterned ones.  You can find a selection of M-D Building Products at your local Home Depot, or click the (affiliate) image below:

I first learned about this company through the Haven Conference I attended in July and I immediately wanted to try my hand at working with sheet metal – and you will too once you see how easy this is.

I chose a gold sheet in a clover pattern sized 1′ by 2′.

I determined that I wanted a 2 ½” lip around my decorative metal tray, so we (my Step-Dad and I) marked the corners at 2 ½” in from either edge and then cut them out with tin snips.

My Step-Dad isn’t wearing gloves in these photos, but the edges are fairly sharp, so I highly recommend them (from the person that left little blood marks on the end of the tray).

Easy cutting – the metal is thick enough to be solid, but thin enough that the tin snips cut through it smoothly and easily.

Once all four corners were cut out, we used scrap wood as a straight edge to bend the edges up into a tray shape.

You can keep working the edges if you want a crisper line by tapping it with a rubber mallet.

We brought all four edges into place and then tied them together with some floral wire, twisted tightly with pliers.

The (sharp) wire ends were tucked in towards the centre of the tray so that no one got poked.

That’s it – you’ve made a decorative metal tray!

This tray is not quite strong enough to hold cups of coffee, but it can hold a bit of weight, so it would be perfect as a desk organizer to hold envelopes and stationery.

I decided to use it as the base of my Fall tablescape (and probably my Christmas one too) as a centrepiece.

Four simple cuts, a few twists of the wire and you’ve created this beautiful decorative metal tray.

I filled it with candles, balls and leaves for my Fall tablescape.

I have more sheet metal projects in the works, so don’t think you are limited to trays.  Here are just a couple of ideas I found on Pinterest:

LOVE these candle holders, I’d love to line my walkway with these come Hallowe’en.
