Wow!  If you don’t believe in the power of a gallon of paint, you need to see my master bedroom makeover!  From BM Chelsea Gray to BM Pale Oak and Behr Watery, the room seems to have doubled in size!

So, I’ve been separated (the time he had actually moved out) since April 2019.

I’m not going to be bitter or slanderous instead, I hope you’ll view today’s post as a positive, proud moment for me.

April 2019 left me with a master bedroom that consisted of an area rug, a chair, and two lamps.  Not trashing the ex here – him taking the bedroom furniture was the divide so that I could keep the kids bedroom furniture – so it was fair.

Empty and depressing, but fair.

Since April 2019, I have built myself a kingsize bed, installed faux board and batten, saved enough money to buy some fancy-schmancy nightstands and have received gifts from my parents in the form of a mattress and (this Christmas) a TV.

The final stages of my master bedroom makeover consist of building a console table (coming soon), getting new curtains (if I ever figure out what I want) and today’s massive paint job.

I’ll show you my Christmas bedroom as a before shot:

I loved the colour – dark, cozy, warm and perfect for hibernating.

But still a remnant of the past.

It’s time for crisp, fresh, bright and new!!  I’ve been obsessing over “Cotswold cottage” looks on IG.  @OsborneInteriors is my favourite page for inspiration and her colour scheme was on par with what I ended up going with.

Turns out I’m pretty indecisive when it comes to picture hanging…

this is the wall with the LEAST amount of holes that needed patching.  The other wall had about 2 dozen!

I like to paint a 3″ strip of ceiling white in the top corner of the walls before applying the actual colour.  For me, it makes cutting in easier since I don’t have to cover over old paint that may or may not have been right at the ceiling line.  Not necessary, but a bit of error room if you need it (and I do).

All of the 3 dozen+ holes were filled and then I went to town with my DeWalt random orbit sander.  Again, you don’t have to do this, but my walls had a lot of highs and lows and I really wanted to “do it right” once and for all.

I used 150 grit and sanded from baseboards to the white edging then wiped down the walls with a damp cloth.

My master bedroom makeover started with Benjamin Moore’s Pale Oak for three of the walls.

It took 3 coats to fully cover the Chelsea Grey (I probably should have primed first).

Then I tackled my accent/panelled wall with Behr’s “Watery” – which Benjamin Moore colour-matched for me.

The other thing I did, and I HIGHLY recommend, is sand and paint the baseboards.  I thought mine were okay, but with a single coat refresh in Benjamin Moore’s “Vanilla Milkshake”, I couldn’t believe the difference!

Baseboards, trim, doors and window frame all got a coat of this warm white and it looks SO GOOD!

My master bedroom makeover isn’t completely finished – I need to hang pictures etc – but the difference a change in paint makes is phenomenal!

The bedding is from Pottery Barn and is called Mackenna Paisley in taupe (on sale right now: Jan. 2021). I’m a bit of a bedding snob, but I have duvet covers from Pottery Barn that are 10+ years old and they are still as soft and pretty as when I bought them, so this is a splurge worth doing.

My little reading chair (from Pier One) still fits in and I can accent it with blue, beige, grey, cream – almost any colour lumbar pillow.

The TV cord is a bit of an eyesore – at the moment – but again, there is a console table on my to do list which will hide that nicely.

Dilbeck nightstand

The nightstand is called Dilbeck by Joss & Main and I found it on Wayfair.

It doesn’t quite match my DIY kingsize bed frame, but it’s close enough and if anyone is in my bedroom (other than me) I hope the colour discrepancy will be the last thing on their mind. 😉

It took a LOT of work – but I’m feeling so proud of every little step that took me from an empty room, to this crisp, clean and bright oasis.

New year and fresh starts!

Have a great one!
