I generally show projects on my blog, and every so often my kids, but I rarely show my fur-babies – which is wrong given that they are such a huge part of my life. I have had dogs and cats for most of my life and can’t imagine my world without their presence.
Just look at this face:
This is Lacey Bernice – our Bernese – and one of the loves of my life. We walk, talk and drive together. She cries when the girls go to school and bounces off of the ceiling when they come home. She is a gentle soul and can never have (or give) enough love.
But she’s a Bernese Mountain Dog, and as with any breed there is a downside to loving her… Bernese have (on average) a very short lifespan; typically 7 – 8 years. They are also prone to cancer at an average age of 4. I don’t tell you this to deter you from finding a reputable Berner Breeder, but to give you an idea of some of the obstacles one could potentially face in the years to come. With them, it’s good to have pet insurance (from somewhere like this pet website) that could help you when these obstacles rear its ugly head.
In an effort to minimize the chances of anything bad happening to my baby, I’ve become aware of ingredients in her food, treats, and even medications. Every dog you meet will have different dietary requirements. Before Lacey, I had a pitbull border collie mix called Sammy. He required quite a meaty diet with lots of veg so that he could keep his energy up. I then found that when I got Lacey, that diet wouldn’t be as suitable. I knew all dogs needed slightly different foods, just like us humans, but I didn’t realize I would have to put this much thought into their diet, as well as having a nutritious main meal, it’s important that dogs have some kind of bully sticks as a treat for training and to maintain their oral hygiene. When you get a dog, the vet or online blogs can help you determine what kind of diet they need.
With Lacey, I don’t buy top of the line food for her (only because price is an issue), but I stay FAAAAR away from lower priced foods as well. I look for quality, natural ingredients – so when PetSmart™ and Only Natural Pet™ approached me about writing about their all-natural pet food, I was intrigued.
Only Natural Pet is a comprehensive, vet-formulated pet line made of honest ingredients that live up to Only Natural Pet’s ingredient standards.
Check out the ingredient listing:
I’ll be honest and say we don’t get meals this nutritious for ourselves! All of the food is raw, giving your pet the maximum amount of nutrients possible. The meat (in this case turkey) is freeze-dried and the vegetables are dehydrated for maximum freshness. You simply add a bit of water before dinner time and voila!
Okay, this is going to sound creepy and weird – but I am, I own it – this looked kind of delish, so I did try a small bite and it tasted sort of like a salt and sugar-free version of stuffing – sans the bread.
(Disclaimer: please don’t eat this yourself, the “raw turkey and whole eggs” didn’t register with me prior to taking my bite.) No damage done – plumbing continued to work in fine form. lol
Formulated by a holistic veterinarian, Only Natural Pet helps your pet thrive with paleo-inspired, high-protein diets free of starches, artificial ingredients and grains. Only Natural Pet features natural, clean ingredients, sustainable business practices and human-quality products.
But you know the true test is in the tastebuds of our princess.
I don’t know? Do you think she liked it?
Gone! (although, I will admit she very specifically picked out the carrots – hilarious!)
