I have been a painting phenom over here! The weather has been gorgeous so I’ve been out in the garage making over just about anything I can get my hands on.
A friend wanted to come over and take a stab a refinishing, so I invited her to come and play with me.
This is the desk Trish started with;
It was in beautiful condition, very few marks and no scratches – it was almost painful to watch her sand it down – but she wanted a navy blue desk for her son Bryson.
We roughed up the surface with a 150 grit sandpaper to smooth out any little notches and remove the varnish layer and any furniture polish that it had accumulated over the years.
We then primed the whole thing with a latex primer to stop any wood tannin bleed and to help the paint adhere better.
I like to fill in nicks and dents after the primer is on – I find it shows all the little imperfections a bit better so I don’t miss anything. Trish filled where necessary and once dry, sanded the entire desk smooth with 320 grit sandpaper.
We used Benjamin Moore’s Advance formula paint in a pearl finish because (it’s my favourite) it hardens over time and is almost as durable as old-school oil paints but without the fumes and messy clean-up because it’s latex (water-washable).

Trish’s son Bryson will be getting this for a birthday surprise – he’ll be turning 6 and was excited to have his own desk in grade one at school… so I think he’ll be pleased to have a big-boy desk at home too.
Trish chose some new cup handles to finish the navy blue desk makeover and I think it’s just perfect!
I’m not gonna lie – I hope I’ve given Trish the painting bug so she can come and play with me more often.
