Scrap wood projects - Owls - 100 Things 2 Do

I must be the Queen of scrap wood projects. I don’t even know how I accumulate so much scrap wood, other than the fact that I hate to throw anything into the landfill – even if it is a 6″ scrap of 2″ x 2″. For today’s simple scrap wood project I dug through my pile and came out with two bits of 4″ x 4″ pressure treated post – just perfect for making scrap wood owls!

I think these bits have been in my scrap wood bin for a few years. I’m guessing they were leftover from when we built the girls’ playground in the backyard.

I used my mitre saw to cut the rotted ends off of both and then cut them to 8 ½” and 6″.

I traced a partial circle on two attaching sides to create the nose bridge for my scrap wood owls and then cut it with a jig saw. It’s tough to see in this picture, but hopefully you get the idea.

I did a bit of sanding to smooth everything out and get the yellow paint off, then marked where I thought the eyes should go with a marker. This could almost be a scrap wood elephant don’t you think?

I used a 1 ¾” spade bit and drilled out my eye sockets on the marked spots. (If you just started reading here that would sound horrific. lol)

I sanded my scrap wood owls a bit more to round out the heads, smooth the bridge section and extend the beaks slightly, then a bit at the bottom so they didn’t seem so rigid.

I added some stain to the bodies and then painted the top ‘feathers’ and done!

He’s so cute!

If I’d painted them white, they’d be perfect snow owls and a great decor piece for winter.

You could even glue a couple of craft feathers to the head to make your owls more whimsical. (I’m totally going in search of feathers – you can’t get whimsical enough for me.)

Use them as bookends or paperweights – even door stops.

The inspiration for these scrap wood owls came from an Etsy artist I found on Pinterest. They had made about a half-dozen out of what looked like 2″ x 2″ scraps and had painted them in a rainbow of colours – so cute!

These scrap wood owls took a small bite out of my pile, but I can’t wait to show you what I made for the Wood Art Challenge I’m participating in on the 24th!
