All you need to create these festive and rustic wooden Christmas trees is some scrap wood and a jig saw!
I was at HomeSense the other week – which is my SAHMom version of a luxury vacation – and I was snapping photos here and there of projects that I wanted to buy, but knew I could make for a fraction of the price (even though HomeSense really does have great prices).
One item caught my eye in particular; a wooden Christmas tree that was about 2″ thick.
As luck would have it, I had a 2″x 8″ piece of wood in the garage so I decided to make myself a forest.
There’s not much to these wooden Christmas trees really – I traced a pattern onto my 2×8 board and then cut my trees out with my Bladerunner X2, but you could use a jigsaw just as easily.
I had posted a video on InstaStories, but I can’t seem to find it now to attach to this blog post (shit!) All you missed was a time-lapse video of me cutting what are essentially triangles into the sides of the 2×8 board.
I gave the trees a good sanding and then applied a very light stain and clear coat to protect them.
I did add a bit of sno-flock to the branches, but I’m not sure it made them any better?
I had planned on giving pairs of trees as gifts to friends, but they look so cute on my bookshelves, that I might have to keep them for myself.
I know – I’m such a grinch.
These wooden Christmas trees also make a great centrepiece on my coffee table – interspersed with candles and backlit with my actual Christmas tree:

You NEED one! You can do so many things with one, and they are relatively inexpensive compared to other major saws. Check out the WORX Axis jig saw and reciprocating saw in one – I just got one and I LOVE it!
LOVE this! Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll put my hubby to work with the jigsaw and I’ll do the sanding. I had wondered how you got the trees to stand up by themselves, but then I read it was a 2″ thick board, so that makes good sense! Thanks!
They are quite sturdy, so you won’t have to worry about them tipping over. If you did end up using 1″ thick wood, you could always add a small triangle piece to the back of the base to ensure they don’t topple over. Have fun!
