Are you a Joanna Gaines fan?

I’m not really country or farmhouse chic – but there’s something about her style that appeals even to me. Maybe it’s the warm and welcoming feel. Maybe it’s the metal sign she hangs in every house.

Smooth lead-in right? (not entirely cohesive, but I got the “metal sign” in there lol.)

Houseful of Handmade made a gorgeous hammered metal sign that looked so much like the real thing I had to give it a try myself…. but there’s no point repeating her project entirely, when I could put a different spin on it right?

I started out the same as HousefulofHandmade.com, by cutting out my saying on the Silhouette Cameo onto thick 12×12″ cardstock. (roughly the thickness of a cereal box)

I (accidentally) chose a font that didn’t have connectors to the centres of O’s and E’s, so those middles were lost.

No biggie – it’ still readable.

I love this – I’m such an Autumn person.

I went through my scrap wood stash and found some really scruffy pieces that may have been pallet boards at one time. I cut 45° angles on the corners and sized them to be just slightly smaller than my 12 x 12″ cardstock.

I used Gorilla Glue to stick the corners together and then reinforced the back with some staples.

Once your frame is completely dry and solidly glued, sand down the front and paint or stain it in the colour of your choice. I went with an off-white as a base coat and then an almost navy blue over top of that. Two swipes down each (dried) side with 320 grit sand paper and I had a beautiful aged finish.

You’ll notice I didn’t paint inside the frame – that’s because my “copper” piece is going to fit over top of the frame and not in behind it. If you want to tuck your metal sign behind the frame itself, you will want to finish this interior edge.

I gave my cardstock quite a few thin layers (front and back) of Rustoleum’s Metallic paint in aged copper.

You want to make sure you get the inside edges as well, so it really looks like a copper sign.

I got playing with my scroll saw and cut a couple of fun little leaves to add to the frame.

I used glue dots to tack the corners of my copper quote in place and then added tiny screws to support the look of a true metal sign.

A (faux) copper metal sign is a little different – somewhat unique right?
