Have large equipment in your garage or shed that is taking up needed space?  This simple lawnmower storage stand / snowblower storage stand puts the out-of-season tool up and out of the way creating double storage on the same footprint!!

 I can’t believe it’s only May 7th!

I have been hauling ass for the past month and my brain is telling me it must be almost June by now.  Time flies when you’re having fun (or need to meet a deadline).

I have patched, sanded, and painted 3 of the four walls in my garage – no easy task since it is a 1 ½ storey, 2 ½ car garage.

It looks SO GOOD!!  You’ll see, I’ll show you in a big reveal in the next couple of weeks.

I’ve done a huge amount of purging and organizing and the steel cabinets (lateral file cabinets here) have created an incredible amount of ORGANIZED storage.  (I love them so much!)

I’m still using my Grampa’s tried and true garden tool hanger, but I’ve put a piece of plexiglas in behind the tools so they don’t swing and bump the freshly painted walls.  It’s a big job and once every 15 years is all I’m up for.

I’ve put almost all of my storage units on dollies (a frame with four castors) so that I can easily move them around to clean when the sawdust gets to be too much.

BUT, I have larger equipment that can’t be stored in cabinets or cupboards and I need regular and easy access to….

like my snowblower and lawnmower.

Big units that take up a large footprint when set side by side.

Tedious when you only use one each season, so I decided to build a lawnmower storage stand – or snowblower storage stand – depending on the season.

I’m sharing the idea, but not the measurements, because the chances of us (you and I ) having the exact same snowblower and lawnmower are pretty slim, so my measurements wouldn’t matter anyways.  Instead I’ll show you how I made mine and you can switch it up to fit your needs.

Lawnmower storage / Snowblower storage

Put the tallest of your big equipment on the floor; chances are this will be your snowblower. I left the snow chute and handle in place because when it’s cold, I’m not going to want to have to assemble it every time I need to plow the driveway.

Cut scrap 2”x4″ pieces to a height that gives the chute clearance.

Place your pieces a the four corners of your snowblower, wheel it out and then see if your lawnmower will fit in that space.  In my case, I had to widen the distance between the legs considerably.

Spacing is key – you want a large enough footprint that your mower and blower will roll out easily, but not so big a footprint that it takes up unnecessary space.  I have about 2″ of clearance on either side of my lawnmower.

Once you’ve determined the width of your lawnmower storage stand, cut three pieces of scrap 2″ x 4″ to that measurement.

Attach one board, using 2 ½” pocket screws, or 2 ½” deck screws drilled in from the outside, between the two end boards.  I laid this board flat in case I needed more room for the mower to move forward.

Attach the second board to the top of this to create a square.  Check for square before screwing into place.  (Those are my winter workshop Crocs – not to be confused with my summer workshop Crocs, lawn mowing Crocs, or “fancy” Crocs 😂)

The third board will go between the two perpendiculars at the front of your lawnmower storage stand.  It will be the top board and there won’t be a bottom one so that your mower/blower can roll in and out without any impediment.

Once you have the front and back sections built, it’s time to re-measure to figure out the depth of your snowblower storage stand.  Again, I rolled the blower in and then repeated with the mower to make sure that I had enough depth to fit both with their handles sticking out.

Cut 4 pieces of 2″ x 4″ to that length and drill 2 ½” pocket holes in either end of those boards.  Attach the front and back frames together using these as the side boards at top and bottom.

After the sides are in place, it’s just a matter of attaching boards to the top to act as the shelf for your snowblower storage stand.  I went with 2″ x 4″ wood again because my lawnmower has some weight to it.  If you have a massive snowblower though, you might want to replace my 2″ x 4″ suggestion with 4″ x 4″ posts.

I used 2 ½” deck screws and about ½” spacing between the boards.

I whipped this lawnmower storage stand up in less than an hour, so it’s a really simple project, but makes a big difference in the organization of your garage or shed.

I can just roll my blower out of it’s little house and tuck it back in quickly after the driveway is done.

My snowblower is light enough that I was able to lift it on top of the lawnmower storage stand to put it away for the summer, but if you have a “big man”, then I’ve seen options with a hinged ramp that you can attach to roll it up to the upper platform.

That or a kind neighbour would work.

Ignore those dirty walls, I built and photographed this before the final paint job.

My snowblower is small enough that I can even fit a small gas can on the upper shelf when the lawnmower is below.  Grab ‘n go!

Maybe you live in a climate that doesn’t require a snowblower… tuck your pressure washer above or below to double your storage on the same footprint!

My lawnmower storage stand / snowblower storage stand isn’t very pretty is it?  Darn it!  Now I’m going to have to paint it so it goes with my pretty, new garage.

The work never ends people!!

One more step to a cleaner, brighter, more organized garage/workshop!

Have a great one!
