Popping in for a quick and dirty today (Yeah!)
‘Quick’ post that is in my ‘dirty’ backyard – get your minds out of the gutter! 😂
Mr. Odie, our 8 year old orange tabby is “solidly built”. I won’t say he’s obese because I believe in “more to love”, but he is about 20lbs which means he is “big boned”.
I see him jumping down from the 8′ fence top and cringe at the thought of 20lbs of weight impacting down on 2 popsicle stick legs. My shoulders ache thinking of it.
Pair this with increased coyote sightings in my neighbourhood and I was a bit worried that my fluffy butt wouldn’t be able to quickly haul ass up a fence if the need arose.
So I grabbed some warped wood from my stash, cut them to 10″ by 8″, and added shelf brackets to the underside.
You’ll see in the photos below that the wood was completely bowed in the middle, so I made sure to put the rounded side up to help shed water. It really was useless for anything except a simple cat ladder – so it worked out well.
I attached the shelves in two areas in my yard so that Big Man would quit clawing up my fences.

It doesn’t get much simpler than this for a cat ladder.
I will stain it black to match the fence so that the wood lasts and the cat ladder is less obvious.
Okay… sort of a success.
He jumped from the upper shelf to the ground instead of using the lower shelf – but men usually have a slower learning curve right? 😂
For now he likes it as a new vantage point to watch the world from.
And the lower cat ladder rung is just higher than my dog’s head, so it will also keep Miss Lacey’s cold, wet nose out of his butt. 😂
