I am a couple of days late in posting this, but I was back and forth on whether or not to submit my parent’s basement makeover into the Spring 2018 edition of the One Room Challenge.
The basement needs a LOT of work, and the basement makeover will be dramatic – but I wasn’t sure if I would have 6 weeks worth of content to share on the blog since I won’t be changing out carpeting or lighting. I finally decided (yesterday) to go for it because I think you guys will enjoy seeing the before and after.
So, without further ado, I give you the “Before” shot of my Spring 2018 ORC entry: my parent’s basement.
This end is what they call the “home gym” – and this isn’t at all staged. Their home gym has become a dumping ground storage area for everything they don’t have room for in their actual storage area.
You’re looking at magazine collections, VHS collections, DVD’s, exercise equipment (underneath everything) and a whole whack-load of other stuff that shouldn’t be here.
The home gym has become so over run that it is completely unusable at this point.
This basement room is a long 13′ by 33′, so on the other end you will see my parent’s home theatre. We had kitted this area out a while ago, with all the latest sound and projectors from RM Projectors, this is most likely used each day or every two days! My parents enjoy watching films on the weekends and after a long day at work. I think all we need to help get better sound quality in this place is the use of home theater subwoofers. That should enhance the listening experience and we’d be able to enjoy the movies a lot more than before.
There is an electric fireplace between the doorways that lead to the landing area near the basement staircase.
Opposite you see the basement windows (that have had plywood inserts too keep the room dark for movie viewing).
The white border you see along the top edge is an elaborate anaglypta and the oak trim beneath it hides rope lighting – again for the full theatre effect.
I’ve got my work cut out for me right?
Here is my proposed mood board – given that I have to work within the limits of certain pieces of gym equipment and the existing sofas:
Spring 2018 ORC – Parent’s basement makeover plan:
- box up and/or remove offending items (clutter offends me, and this is going to be a biggie)
- paint trim BM Cloud White
- paint walls BM White Sand
- incorporate neutral area rug into theatre section of room
- get rid of gym equipment that isn’t used
- bring in accents in BM Mount Saint Anne blue
- paint accent wall in BM Mount Saint Anne blue
- window coverings
- change out artwork
- stage space
The biggest job hands down is going to be boxing up all the “stuff” that has over-run the space.
Home Gym / Theatre Room progress:
- Week 1 – before shots and inspiration board
- Week 2 – the purge
- Week 3 – choosing a design plan
- Week 4 – paint colour
- Week 5 – textiles
- Week 6 – THE REVEAL!
Check back next week to see my progress on my parent’s basement makeover and don’t forget to check out all the other bloggers competing in the Spring 2018 ORC. You’ll find dozens of rooms in the challenge, so there will be no shortage of inspiration for your project!

I checked out the site. You not only have a challenge with your space, but a lot of competition. But you are certainly up for the challenge. My money is on YOU. Good luck.
