Today’s the day bloggers everywhere showcase the progress they’ve made for their projects in the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge. I’ve submitted my parent’s basement – which houses a theatre room section and a home gym section – as my challenge entry.
This week was all about boxing up all the shit items that have turned their home gym into a hoarder’s haven.
I wouldn’t say that I’m OCD by any stretch of the imagination, however – and compared to my parents and sibling – I am fanatical, and this space had me swearing and carrying on in such a rant.
My Mom asked me to “paint the basement” as a birthday gift to her, so I bit my tongue and agreed to attempt a home gym makeover.
My Mom thought I could just go in and paint – and I could have if you wanted a skyline-type paint job. No, every article in the room had to be moved away from the walls so that I could actually get to them to apply paint.
I picked up a couple of dozen moving boxes, some packing tape, foam wrap and paper tissue and got to work on creating/finding space.
Why? That’s all I can say… Why?
Why does anyone need to keep VHS and DVDs when there is Netflix? Why does anyone need years of magazines when there is the internet? Most of this was left when my brother moved out… 20 years ago. He may be right, some of this might be worth something someday – but VHS? I have my doubts.
You can never have too many programming books. Especially when they are ones that are almost as obsolete as the Commodore 64 (original).
This is less than half of what I boxed up and pulled out of the room.
Once the bookshelves were empty, I lugged most of them up and out to the garage.
My Mom made me promise not to throw anything out (my parent’s are snowbirds, so they weren’t home during this purge session), so this is where all of the bookcases from their home gym makeover sit until they return.
My Grandfather’s weights were pared down to a couple of each and the rest hit the curb.
I FaceTimed my parents while I was in the throes of this mayhem and I have to tell you my mother threatened to wash my mouth out with soap more than a few times. This kind of hoarding really does invoke such a rage in me. It’s hard to believe I’m related to these people.
It took a few days, but you can finally see the walls in my parent’s home gym.
Do you feel like you can finally breathe? I did.
How about some before and afters of the home gym makeover of this past week?
I could be finished the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge right now – this is pretty dramatic already right!?
Who knew from the first photo that my parents actually had a wall of mirrors for their home gym?
Week 1 of the Spring 2018 ORC has been somewhat back-breaking since I didn’t have any help lifting or carrying any of this stuff (guilt trip aimed at you Hubby and brother) – but then I also get to revel in a job well done all by myself as well.
