If you’re drowning in clamps and tripping over them every time you enter your workshop, this DIY clamp rack is for you. Using nothing more than leftover lumber, basic tools, and a mild desire for organization, I built a scrap wood clamp rack that keeps my clamps off the floor and within arm’s reach. Thank you Shara at Woodshop Diaries for the inspiration!

This is a simple, FREE project designed for the home DIYer—not a heavy-duty clamp wall for professional woodworkers with feelings about their joinery. If you’ve got scrap wood and too many clamps (is that even possible?), this easy clamp storage solution might just save your sanity.

The Problem: Clamps Everywhere. Absolutely Everywhere.

You know that moment when you go to grab one clamp and the entire pile avalanches onto your foot?

Yeah. That.

Remember my portable tool rack?

Well those pegboard hooks were not cutting it.  Clamps kept falling off whenever I rolled the cart around and it was making me bonkers.

I didn’t need a massive, woodshop-worthy clamp storage system—I needed a small DIY clamp rack that worked for real-life projects and real-life messes… and I didn’t even think about scrap wood until Shara at Woodshop Diaries posted her article the other week.

I have a scrap wood pile that is getting dangerously close to becoming a scrap wood lifestyle.

The Scrap Wood Situation – what can I say? I’m cheap when it comes to wood.

This project is powered entirely by scraps:

If your scrap pile looks like mine—lots of small pieces with potential—this is the perfect use for them.

The 4 Pieces I Used to Build This DIY Clamp Rack

From the chaos, I selected just four pieces of scrap wood:

  1. One horizontal board – the main body of the clamp rack. I went with (minimum) 18″ so that I could attach it to two studs for strength

  2. Two short vertical side supports – these keep the rack off the wall and support the clamps. Measure your deepest clamp to determine how long you’ll need these.

  3. One narrow top strip – where the clamps hang

That’s it. No fancy joinery. No measurements that require math.

How the Scrap Wood Clamp Rack Was Assembled

This is a confidence-boosting project. If you can drive screws in roughly the right place, you’re qualified.

Step-by-Step (Very Official Instructions)

  1. Attach the side supports to the back of the main board using wood glue and pocket screws. DIY clamp rack, scrap wood clamp rack, storing clamps, simple clamp storage

  2. Mount the back into wall studs for strength. Be sure to check for level. DIY clamp rack, scrap wood clamp rack, storing clamps, simple clamp storage

  3. Add the front to create a ledge for the clamp heads.  Glue and screw from the front into the sides.

Someday I’ll have a pretty workshop with perfect organization and no sawdust – but for now my little scrap wood clamp rack is tucked in between my ladder hanger and my motivational sign.

People Also Ask: DIY Clamp Rack FAQs

How do you make a DIY clamp rack?

A DIY clamp rack can be made using scrap wood, screws, and basic tools. A horizontal board with a small lip and side supports creates simple, effective clamp storage.

Can you build a clamp rack from scrap wood?

Yes! A scrap wood clamp rack is ideal for small workshops. Even short, mismatched pieces of wood can be repurposed into functional clamp storage.

How much weight can a DIY clamp rack hold?

This depends on the wood used and how it’s mounted. This particular DIY clamp rack is intended for light to moderate clamp collections—not heavy-duty use – but I also made sure to screw the rack into studs for extra strength.

Is a scrap wood clamp rack strong enough?

For home DIY projects, absolutely. Mounted into studs, a scrap wood clamp rack easily supports bar clamps, F-style clamps, and spring clamps.

What’s the best clamp storage for a small workshop?

Wall-mounted clamp racks are one of the best space-saving solutions. A small DIY clamp rack keeps clamps organized without taking up valuable floor space.

Final Thoughts (and Mild Self-Congratulation)

I didn’t buy anything.
I didn’t overthink it – the idea was entirely Shara’s
And I finally stopped stepping on clamps.

This DIY clamp rack may not impress professional woodworkers, but it makes my workshop safer, tidier, and far less swear-inducing—which feels like a win.

If you’ve been hanging onto scrap wood “just in case,” congratulations—this is the case.

Have a great one!
