If you live with a big, drippy, drooly, messy dog (or 3 like I do), then you already know mealtime is less “graceful dining experience” and more “waterfall meets Slip ’N Slide.”
Puddles around the water bowl… kibble everywhere… that one piece of soggy dog food you step on in socks. You know the life.

And that is exactly why every dog parent needs a dog placemat.

Please believe me when I say I have tried just about EVERYTHING on the market.  Between my 3 now, several over the years, and many, many foster dogs, I have tried the silicone mats, washable mats, plastic trays, towels… you name it, I’m sure I’ve given someone money for it.

The problem with ALL of these is that they aren’t low-maintenance.  Silicone mats keep the water on the silicone, but it doesn’t stop your dog from stepping in the drops and then walking all over the house with dirty (and now wet) feet.  Towels soak up the wet, but don’t try quickly and the water soaks through onto the floor anyways, and yes, if you don’t wash them regularly, mold does happen.

After trying just about anything and everything, I’m coming to you with the best solution I’ve found over many years of trial and error;

Washable pee pads. (Amazon affiliate link. For full affiliate disclosure please see bottom of the page)

Can you hear the angels singing?!

Yup, should have been obvious from the start, but I got caught up in the cute bone-shaped trays and silicone dreams.

Washable pee pads have a polyester upper, which soaks up the drips, and a waterproof liner to keep water from reaching the floor.

These are so perfect it’s ridiculous!

They come in several different sizes, but I went with extra-large to catch those last minute drips that seem to pour out as Bentley walks away from his dish.

The ONLY problem with these pee pad dog placemats is that my Queen Bella eats lying down.  I know, weird – but she was a puppy mill Mama before coming here and I can only guess that eating while nursing created this habit.

Above you’ll see sneak-peek of my solution for keeping all of the pee pad placemats in place so that this doesn’t happen:

Yup, bunched placemats and kibble getting underneath and into my furnace vent.

Today I’m going to show you how to build your own DIY dog placemat — one that’s sturdy, wipeable, waterproof, and big enough to handle even the sloppiest drinkers and snackers. The best part? It costs next to nothing!

Big dogs need big solutions.

Why Every Dog Family Needs a Dog Placemat

Sure, you could just mop constantly… or surrender to perma-wet flooring, but we get enough of that with the seasonal mess that comes with our furry friends right?  I don’t want to have to mop MORE.
Building a dog placemat solves so many problems at once:

Plus, if you’re already on the big, drippy dog team, you know we need oversized gear. The average store-bought placemat isn’t made for dogs with faces the size of dinner plates.

Making your own means you can build it exactly the size your drool monster requires.

Supplies to Build a DIY Dog Placemat

You’ll need:

This is the perfect scrap-wood project — which somehow makes it even more satisfying.

How to Build Your Own Dog Placemat

1️⃣ Order your washable pee pads
Decide how much “splash zone” you need covered. For big dogs, go bigger than you think — trust me.

2️⃣ Measure to get the external dimensions
I went with a rectangle to be practical, but if you don’t mind folding or hand-stitching your pee pad to another shape, then make an adorable bone or ball. Either way, this DIY dog placemat can be fully customized to your style.

3️⃣ Cut out the edges
Use a saw to cut  a length of 1×2 (or whatever scrap you found) to act as the back, then another 2 pieces for the sides.

attach the sides to the back in a butt joint and using 1 1/4" screws

Attach the sides to the back using wood glue and 1 ¼” screws.  Because the wood is thin and we are drilling near the ends, pre-drilling will keep your wood from splitting.

4️⃣ Time for a base
I went with 1/8″ handy panel from my local hardware store.  It’s made of MDF with a melamine coating on one side.  In hindsight I would have used wood, the melamine can warp with moisture, so extra diligence in protecting it with polyurethane is imperative.

attach your 1/8" handy panel and drill from the bottom up into your side pieces.

5️⃣ Paint or stain
Choose something durable and wipeable. This isn’t a “light use” project — this is the front line of drool defence.

6️⃣ Seal with polyurethane
Waterproofing is critical. Two or three coats will keep your dog placemat from swelling or warping.

7️⃣ Add your decorative touches
A name stencil is optional… but if your dog eats better than you do, you may as well lean into the theme.

The Final Result

What you’re left with is a dog placemat that:

And yes — your dog will love it too. Maybe not in an emotional way… but they’ll appreciate that their water bowl no longer dances across the floor like a runaway Roomba.

For Bella and Stella (frenchie cross and also a puppy mill Mama rescue), I made two different sizes.  This also gives them some delineation between eating areas…

which really is just about me.  They eat from every dish regardless.  But *I feel like I’ve created perfect eating zones for them.
