Are you sick of makeovers?
Of course not!
Everyone wants to see trash turned into treasure right? It inspires us as to what is possible – even on a small budget.
I wouldn’t say this pine table/desk was trash exactly:
but it had a few nicks and dents here and there that needed a little TLC.
If I told you I bought this for $20 would you consider refinishing yourself? Come on! $20 for a solid pine table?! That’s outstanding!
Don’t believe me?
How about after sanding the top down to bare wood, and adding primer to the base:
are you feeling the love now?
How about now?
Yup, same piece with an uber-simple table makeover. The top was done with a wash – 1:1 parts water and paint, spread over the bare wood, left to set for a few minutes and then the excess wiped off with a dry cloth. Easier than stain, a far better match, and without any extra expense!
The body was done in Chelsea Grey in BM’s “Advance” formula (my favourite for strength and durability). One quart comes in at a whopping $70 Cdn, but I used less than a third to coat this piece twice, so there is plenty left over for other projects. (not so subtle foreshadowing)
We don’t have a kitchen table – by choice. We use our dining room for dinners together, so this table makeover is really more of a desk makeover.
Perhaps this table was actually intended to be a desk to begin with? It does have a drawer?
The girls can sit here and munch on snacks after school or finish up their homework while still being in the central hub of activity.
The grey ties in beautifully with the family room decor as well.
I have a confession – it was almost impossible to take photos of this table makeover project – not because the table isn’t gorgeous, but because no matter where I turned, there was clutter; the vacuum lying in the hallway, homework on the counter, craft supplies on the sideboard, wires on the floor… I was bending and tip-toeing all over the place to try and crop out as much mess as I could. Pretty sure I’ve eliminated any question of my insanity to anyone walking by today.
- $20 for the table
- $24 for the primer ($8 for a third)
- $70 for the paint ($24 for a third)
- Grand total for the table makeover / desk makeover: $52
Now where can you buy a table, or desk, for $52? Hopefully you’re feeling inspired.
Have a great one!

I love your table in gray! And isn’t it nice to have dual purpose furniture?! I’ve done quite a few because they typically sell really fast. The latest table I kept the top natural and used milk paint. Super cute, but didn’t photograph the best. http://www.clockworkinteriors.com/farmhouse_table_lucketts_green . Thanks for sharing your talents! Cynthia
