Tooth Fairy Box

Using two pieces of scrap wood, I was able to create this adorable Tooth Fairy box to keep baby’s first teeth.

My girls are too old for the Tooth Fairy.  They won’t admit it because they still want the cash (and they are still losing molars), but even my 10-year-old gives me a skeptical look when she finds money under her pillow.

I’m not telling them anything.  If they’re willing to humour Mom, I’m totally willing to accept it.

I will admit that […]

I made a ping-pong table!

Good morning and Happy Canada Day!

This hot weather has me melting, but given the winter we just came out of, I hate to spend much time indoors.  I havemy patio all set up with a fan moving the air constantly, the Intex pool nearby and a FOLDING PING-PONG TABLE on the patio.

Yup, I built my own […]

Cottage Games / Camping Games

Do any/many of you head to a cottage or go camping in the summer?

We rent a cottage with friends each year and spend a week by the beach “Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool…” (Fresh Prince style).  We load our cars to maximum capacity – so much so that the kids are usually bent into some awkward Twister position and my knees are up around my chest trying to fit one last thing in.

Granted, an ice cream maker isn’t a […]

One-Man Ping-Pong

We have had so much fun with our one-man ping-pong that I had to share the build so you could have fun with your family as well.

First off I want to say that I am the reigning champion of mini ping-pong / one-man ping-pong.  I only built our game last Monday, so I’m sure I’ll blow my record out of the water as I practice, but the family scores are currently:

Championship Beer Pong (with or without beer)

We went over to our dear friends’ house the other night and I was (very belatedly) introduced to beer pong.  Why have I never played this before?  I went to College (and University) and I don’t remember missing any parties when I was there – but the wonder that is beer pong was never introduced into my competitive drinking sport repertoire?

Have you played it before?  Am I the only one on the planet that hadn’t?

We played it with the kids […]

Easter Bunny Door from scrap wood

If your kids are still at an age where the Easter Bunny brings almost as much excitement as Santa Claus, then this is a simple DIY you will want to incorporate into your Easter decor/festivities: and Easter Bunny Door!

I had some leftover 1″ x 12″ rough pine from my super-sized shoe rack build I did for my gal-pal Jen Woodhouse, which was perfectly sized for where I planned to place my Easter Bunny door:

Before & After – Lego Table

This Lego table / Lego storage project took a long time.

Normally, I would have whipped out a nightstand in a day or two, but this one was well over a week – mostly because I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with it.

This […]

Simple Toy Display

This has been a week of I.O.U.’s over here.

I promised my Dad I’d build him a condiment carrier, I promised Chloë I’d build her a tiered shelf to display her toys, I promised Madison I’d refinish a mirror for her….

Technically not I.O.U.’s as in money – but simple projects that I’ve put off for a while and have weighed on my mind.

I’m not sure if simple builds are too boring for you guys now?  Now that I’m showcasing bigger builds […]

Magnetic Advent Calendar

I’ve had a few big projects lately (one you’ve still to see) and I’m feeling like I need a little bit more ‘simple’ in my life.  Today’s magnetic advent calendar is just that – simple.

I’ve had these metal sheets from M-D Building Products since the Haven Conference last July.  I didn’t know what to do with them, but I didn’t want to throw them out “just in case” an idea suddenly popped up.

Hallowe’en Fun – You’ve been BOO’D!!

It’s the beginning of October which means it’s time to start the Hallowe’en hijinks – namely the ring-and-run fun of “You’ve been Boo’d!”

Hallowe'en fun, Hallowe'en printable, You've been boo'd, boo'd, Boo'd poem, Booing

Make up two small bags of Hallowe’en treats, print off these tags and attach – then sneak up to your friends’ doors and …

Tweens and self-esteem – The be.Tween Project

When did parenting get so hard?

Actually, when hasn’t it been hard?

I’m in a household with two “tweenagers” (9 and 11) and each phase of their lives has presented different challenges – from learning to walk, to potty training to letting them assert some independence.

But these tween years – all of their struggles seem to be internal, which is NOT an easy fix.

How they look, how they act, what they wear, what they play with, even what they eat becomes a […]

Small Closet Organization (on a budget)

Miss Chloë got ripped off in the closet department – but in our defence, we didn’t know we were having two kids when we built.  As it was our builder hadn’t incorporated a linen closet into our home, so we had to use part of – what later became – Chloë’s closet.

It’s a single closet, so not minuscule by any means, but certainly smaller than most closets being built in houses today.

Backyard Playground Makeover

If you’ve followed along, you will have seen a few posts now where I’ve done different projects for a playground makeover.

The goal of the entire endeavour was to get a few more years of use out of our backyard play set / treehouse…  I needed to “Tween it up” to make it cool enough for my girls to want to play in again.

I’ll go back to what we started with:
Backyard playground, playset, treehouse, upgrading [...]

Finishing up the Playground – Outdoor Art

Do you ever sit in your yard, front or back, and think “I wish I could add some colour”?

But the idea of painting your fence seems too daunting, permanent and possibly expensive?

My backyard playground updates included colour for the structure itself, but nothing for the fence for those exact reasons.

Outdoor art, outdoor decor, fence art, outdoor canvas, stencil art, playground upgrades

I didn’t want to commit to painting the entire fence and […]

Repurposed Plastic Jug

I trash-dove this morning.

Okay not really into the trash and I didn’t really “dive” – more like I snuck a plastic jug from my friend’s recycling.

After you see what I did with it, you’re going to go in search of recycling to pilfer as well.

I’ll start with the need, so you know where I’m coming from;

that is how my children store their goggles – thrown over the edge of the pool […]

DIY Chalkboard – part of our treehouse upgrades

Chalkboards seem to be all-the-rage now – people are trimming anything and everything with chalkboard paint to create message boards, labels, jar lids, gift tags – you name it and it’s probably had a coating of chalkboard paint to make it better.

Our backyard playground / treehouse is no exception – but where do you find a 3′ x 4′ chalkboard to fit this tall expanse of wall?

Treehouse, playground, treehouse makeover, playground makeover, Tween treehouse, [...]

Candy Bar / Candy Buffet

My girls have danced around the house all weekend reminding me that there are only “9 days left of school”.

At this point, actually learning anything is mute – it’s all about treat days and field trips to celebrate the end of another school year…. essentially a month-long party with a bit of math squeezed in.

Last week Madison had “Candy Day” at school.

I’m not sure why her teachers thought that jacking thirty 11 year-olds full of sugar was a good idea, […]
