Gingerbread Ornaments

November 17th, 2017|HOLIDAYS, RECIPES|

A few years ago my Mom decorated her tree with gingerbread ornaments and I remember sitting near it and thinking how scrumptious it smelled.

This year I decided to make some of my own gingerbread ornaments (with help from Mom and the girls) to create that same warm and homey feel for my own Christmas tree.

The recipe and idea are from Martha Stewart Living circa 1995 – but the recipe tastes just as delicious now as it did then and the […]

Sugar cookies with buttercream icing

May 21st, 2017|RECIPES|

I had this dilemma last week – it was Mother’s Day, my pottery berry bowls that I’d made for my Moms weren’t glazed or fired yet and every cookie-maker in town was booked until August.

How can people be so ahead of the game that they know they’ll need sugar cookies in August!?  I don’t even know if I have underwear for tomorrow morning? (except that I keep 30 pairs just in case)

I digress; my gifts weren’t ready and now I couldn’t even bring […]

Strawberry Brownie Kebabs – an Easy Valentine’s Treat

February 11th, 2017|HOLIDAYS, RECIPES|

These strawberry brownie kebabs are an easy treat that you can whip out in minutes (especially if you buy two-bite brownies) to make for Valentine’s day at school.

There’s not much to it really, you will need:

  • large marshmallows
  • two-bite brownies (or bake-your-own and cut them into 1″ bites)
  • kebab skewers
  • fresh strawberries – washed and hulled
  • semi-sweet chocolate chipits

Easy Meringue Poppers – Great classroom treat!

January 24th, 2017|HOLIDAYS, RECIPES|

My Mom makes meringues.

She makes a LOT of meringues.

Up until I made this recipe, I’d assumed that she adored meringues for the volume she turned out.

Now I know that a little goes a looooooong way.  (No wonder she kept offering them to us!)

This recipe – adapted from Kraft Canada uses 3/4 of a cup of egg whites and it makes roughly 140 meringue poppers.

This is the kind of treat you want to make when you have to send snacks to […]

The BEST Protein Bars in the world

January 20th, 2017|HEALTH/FITNESS, RECIPES|

“The BEST protein bars in the world” sound like a tall order to live up to?

You need to try these and tell me I’m wrong.  I don’t even like protein bars as a rule, but I’ve been snacking away on these like they were candy.  Truly, I even had one as dessert the other […]

Marshmallowy Soft – Aunt Mary’s Divinity Fudge

December 24th, 2016|RECIPES|

One last recipe.

I thought I’d shared it on the blog before, but when I went to find the post there was nothing?

Shame on me.

This is a fudge my Great-Aunt Mary used to make for my Dad every year for his entire life.  She has left us, but her recipe and the memories it brings up are still a staple at our family Christmas.

Divinity fudge, Aunt Mary's fudge, white fudge, fudge

Cake Batter Truffles

December 19th, 2016|RECIPES|

The best part of baking is getting to lick the spoon.  I thought it as a child, and while I do love a warm chocolate chip cookie, I still agree today.

There’s just something about the sugary sweet dough melting in your mouth, or perhaps it’s the temptation of sneaking a taste-test… the forbidden fruit so-to-speak.

Regardless, once I saw these cake batter truffles I knew they had to be on my Christmas treat list for all the batter-eaters in my house.

Chocolate-Dipped Gingersnaps

December 16th, 2016|RECIPES|

If you’ve followed the blog you’ll know that I’m all set up with my faux-fur pillows, my birch candles (from my book), I’m over-stocked in chai lattes and I have a new read – The Nest.  All I need to complete this vision of a perfect Sunday afternoon is a roaring fire and a treat….

a sweet treat….

a sweet, but slightly spicy treat.

I’m thinking ginger, […]

Make Your Own Mosquito Repellent

July 8th, 2016|CLEAN, KIDS, RECIPES, Uncategorised|

Using just three dollar-store ingredients and you can make your own mosquito repellent!

I saw this post on Facebook and decided it was worth giving a try;  Miss Madison is our family’s ‘sweet meat’ and the bugs can’t seem to leave her alone.

Make your own mosquito repellent using dollar-store ingredients

We use spray on mosquito repellents like Deep woods and Off and Avon, but I really don’t like the thought of spraying her […]
