As you may (or may not) know, I am a guest contributor over on the amazing, incredible, brilliant blog House of Wood.  Over the past few months, I have shared a few builds that you would not have seen on 100Things2Do like a super-sized shoe rack, a DIY upholstered ottoman, and this week’s awesome DIY; a mid-century-modern style DIY side table / mini-bookshelf.

I won’t share the full building plans here, but I can give you a few finished images to tempt your taste buds so-to-speak… then you can rush over to Jen’s site to get the plans and check out all the other AMAZING projects she has in her portfolio.

DIY side table / small bookshelf

When I drafted the easy building plans for this small bookshelf, I had my home office in mind.  I wanted a small side table that wouldn’t take up too large a footprint in the small room, but would give an additional storage option for my books and/or crafting supplies:

The great part about this piece is that it can be turned either way to maximize its functionality in a small space.

As I was staging the photos for this DIY side table / small bookshelf, I realized it could be used in a few other places as well.

Like the narrow space between chairs:

Magazines and blankets tucked neatly away – in fact, this DIY side table has about 6 square feet of storage space for books, blankets, games, magazines, pillows…

it also fits nicely next to a sofa.

I found that this small bookshelf / DIY side table also worked well as a bar – with room to store bottles inside and a surface for preparation and accoutrements on top.

But I think my favourite use of this small bookshelf / DIY side table was in my daughter’s room:

It was absolutely perfect to house her books and a few toys, but will easily age with her as she moves into her tweens.  She can continue to fill it with books and bobbles, take advantage of the open back to plug in her electronics, or insert baskets to organize her things.  Actually, baskets would make this a brilliant addition to a nursery!  Tuck diapers and wipes in one basket and then fresh burp cloths, blankets and/or onesies in others.  A diaper genie could fit on the bear shelf, and creams and lotions would be close at hand on the top shelf.

This DIY side table / small bookshelf is such a functional piece and the mid-century-modern look is so on-trend right now.
