I spend a fair amount of time at my desk – editing photos, writing blog posts, paying bills, surfing social media etc. – and since I’ve put a lot of effort into making my new office space “mine” I didn’t want to chance out on the details (aka desk accessories). As this is the case, I like to change it up a little bit. It can get quite boring staring at the same environment day in day out. So what I was thinking was looking into getting living walls installed, so I can transform the way this office looks. It will give it a whole new vibe. So far, it’s been kind of basic, in terms of what I have now.
Up to now I’ve used a hodge podge of containers and baskets from Ikea and the dollar store, and they’ve looked just like that – like they came from Ikea or the dollar store:
I have those black boxes with the silver corners that Ikea sells and baskets upon baskets of every imaginable shape and colour – but none of it goes together and therefore, none of it is fit to accessorize my new office.
I decided I wanted to update my desk accessories without purchasing all new ones, so it was time to bring in a can of Rust-Oleum Special Metallic in gold.
No primer, just a wipe down and then two coats of gold spray paint.
Suddenly those random bits and bobs became a coördinated set that fit in perfectly.
The entire batch became these gorgeous gold desk accessories and took my look from blah to BLAM!
Even my garbage bin had a makeover.
My garbage bags aren’t always this pretty – these Designer Liners® were swag items we received at the Haven conference – so cute!
My black and silver Ikea boxes were painted white with gold accents;
and those ugly plastic photo frames look like they’re off the pages of a Pottery Barn catalogue.
Every office needs a catch-all basket, but the black and white striped one I was using just didn’t give the “chic” vibe I was looking for. Two coats of spray paint and now it’s part of a cohesive feel throughout the room.
Just in case you’re thinking “wow, that’s a LOT of gold in one room!” – don’t worry; gaudy wasn’t what I was going for and all of these gold desk accessories are spread out to give a nice balance and elegant look.
A can of spray paint is an inexpensive and easy way to take several random items and create a coordinated palette in minutes.
Pin it for later:
Have a great one!
