This master bedroom makeover has been WEEKS in the making, and you’ve caught bits and pieces as I’ve finished each DIY – but today I want to share it with you in its entirety – budget and all!
You’ve seen in magazines the sections “Theirs vs. Ours” right? I’m going to go with that idea and break it all down as best I can.
I’ll start by showing you the Modsy design that I was basing this master bedroom makeover on:

I did end up buying a couple of items like the Crate & Barrel bedding and a vase, but the rest of the projects can be found below:

I don’t have a wide-angle lens to capture exactly the same image as Modsy, but you get the idea. The chair is a La-Z-Boy recliner that I picked up on Kijiji a couple of years ago for $120 Cdn (~$93 US) and the dish you see on my dresser is actually a pottery piece my Mom made years ago.

Converting back and forth between Canadian and US can be a bit misleading as the exchange rate changes each day – so my conversions are based on $1.23 Cdn to $1 US (the current rate I believe)
If I had purchased everything that I swapped out or DIY’d, my master bedroom makeover would have come in at $6,772 US or $8,330 Cdn.
WHAT!?
My DIY master bedroom makeover came in at $1,144 US or $1,486 Cdn. (I had to convert backwards from what I paid in Cdn to what it would be in US – conversion rate $0.77)
That’s a difference of $5,628 US or $6,843 Cdn!!!
In my case I was supplied Varathane from Rust-Oleum Canada and handles from Liberty Hardware, so these are additional expenses you should take into account for your own master bedroom makeover. I sold off my old dresser for $140 Cdn and had a Modsy credit of $220 US (you get a ‘store credit’ every time you purchase their design service – and I use it a LOT)
This reduced my costs further to $1,076 Cdn.
Imagine – a master bedroom makeover including a new(ish) dresser, two new nightstands, an area rug, linens and decor for just over $1k.
Unheard of!!
Speaking of the rug – I found this vintage-look beauty for just $369 Cdn for an 8′ by 11’2″. This was possibly one of my favourite purchases that was made for this room. I was inspired by a site such as bazaarvelvet.com, who offer high quality rugs at affordable prices. Plus, with a range of designs, there is so much you can choose from to hopefully achieve the look you had envisioned.
The pillows in the Modsy rendering are gorgeous – one of my favourite things about the entire room – but at $168 per pillow there was no way I was going to get them.
Instead, I found a curtain panel at the fabric store with the same sort of geometric design for $33. One curtain panel and 3 zippers and I recovered some lumbar pillows I had in my linen closet. Total for all three pillows: $48.09 Cdn.
The bedding from Crate & Barrel really is spectacular – I bought the king Lindstrom duvet cover and two shams while they were on sale and the material is so thick and warm – but what I love most is the incredible texture. (Sorry, I’m not a linen-ironer so you’ll have to see the dryer wrinkles) I didn’t think I could find similar material in the width needed to make a king-size duvet cover for less than what I paid online, so this was a purchase worth making. While we’re on the topic of bedding, switching up the mattress is something that should be considered too, especially if this hasn’t been done for a while. This could be as simple as checking out mattress blogs like bestmattress-reviews and comparing various mattresses. As the bed is something that’s used every day, it is important to have good quality products.
Ha, ha! I just found my tea! One of my worst habits is losing my cup of tea. Not my keys or my wallet ever – but at least one cup of tea every single day. I just found yesterdays in the image below! (better get that into the dishwasher before the funk arrives)
I did love the idea of a large print over the dresser, but I love photography more, so I decided to stick with the gallery wall I had (previously on another wall) and just add a sentimental quote in the middle.
I really should have repainted the walls – there are nail holes and some scuffs that will eventually drive me bonkers – but after all of this work, I just want to snuggle in and enjoy for a moment.
I will have to change out my abstract art at some point – the purple just doesn’t flow with the blue of my area rug – fortunately, it’s just a “dirty pour” over canvas, so I can use leftover paint right over these pieces to create something that coördinates perfectly.
My floor mirror (seen in profile below) is a lot bulkier than the Modsy version – but it also has shelves on either side to house jewelry, scarves, hair product etc.
I am still pining for the gorgeous lamps from the Modsy rendering – and perhaps in time I’ll either buy them or find a HomeSense version – for now I think I’ve blown even the small budget I set for this project, and quite frankly, I need a different project to tackle.
This much time in my bedroom without actually snuggling in to enjoy it is torture.

I friggin LOVE that rug and the whole room. I’m going to have to try the design package. I just heard of it but all the room makeovers/ ideas I have seen I just really dig. I was thinking perhaps too strapped but I can do some DIY’s like you. It kinda seems like a deal really. Not all the decor per say, but the visuals alone.
I can’t recommend them highly enough – I’ve had 7 rooms done by them now and they haven’t failed me yet. The best part is DIYing the projects! Get the look without the bucks! Have fun!
