I have another simple project for you today – a monogrammed door mat that you can make in minutes!
I picked up a 24″ x 36″ natural coir door mat from Amazon the other week, with plans to personalize it to look a little more like the $100+ monogrammed door mat from FrontGate.
As you can see, it’s pretty plain and boring, but at $36 Cdn it’s a steal when you see how easy it is to give it a FrontGate inspired monogram!
I used plain painter’s tape and taped off three rows on each edge of the DIY welcome mat. I removed the middle row of tape to create a frame.
Using a utility knife, I cut away the corner sections so that my frame would be continuous all the way around the DIY welcome mat.
I tried a few methods of applying my paint to my mat and found that pouncing with a really wet paintbrush to work the best (versus a sponge brush or just painting it on). Pouncing over and over really allowed the paint to get deep into the coir fibres which will give your monogrammed door mat a stronger colour.
I picked up this mis-tinted pot of paint for $1 at my local home improvement store – while it looks like a gorgeous purple here, you’ll find that the tan/brown of the coir fibres will darken it quite a bit.
I applied a monogram stencil to the centre of my DIY welcome mat and pounced the paint again.
That’s it, I can’t even stretch this out to make a 500 word count post for SEO – mat, tape, paint, peel and done!
I was surprised (pleasantly) at how crisp the lines came out. The painter’s tape doesn’t adhere particularly well, so I figured there would be some paint bleed, but my DIY monogrammed door mat is absolutely perfect!
Twenty minutes to a personalized welcome mat!
