You’ve seen the standing sandboxes I whipped up for one of the daycares I work at right? Well, while the kids are playing, the teachers needed a place to sit…
Okay, they’re all younger than I am and could probably stand and chase kids for hours on hours – but this old broad needed a resting place for snuggles, boo-boo repairs and I’ll be honest – my aching knees. lol
Parameters:
STURDY. Like super-sturdy – these can NOT tip over on a toddler ever. They need to be heavy and braced so there is no potential for wobble, even if the kids are standing and leaning over the back. (Trust me, the sweat was POURING out as the littles thoroughly tested that out)
Weather-resistant – that’s basically about the wood you choose and how you treat it afterwards. Cedar is light and patina’s beautifully with or without any kind of finish applied, but pressure-treated 2″x8″s will last almost as long and are at least three times heavier.
Enter: this awesome wooden bench. Sturdy, simple, and with cuddle room for me and at least 4 littles.
Now, if you’re thinking, “Sure, but I’m not exactly Bob Vila”, don’t worry—this is a beginner-friendly project. The best part? Someone else has already done the measuring for you. That’s right, no math-induced migraines required. You can grab the full wood bench building plans right here: Rogue Engineer’s Outdoor Bench with Back.
Why a Wooden Bench?
Because nothing says “I’m an accomplished adult human” quite like owning outdoor furniture you made yourself. Plus, a wood bench is:
-
Durable: Holds up better than plastic chairs that crack after one summer.
-
Stylish: Goes with literally any décor—modern, rustic, “I-just-painted-over-the-rot” chic.
-
Functional: Works for seating, plant display, or as an impromptu toy truck racetrack.
- Affordable: save the manufacturing and store mark-ups and make it yourself for a fraction of what you’d buy it for.
- Romantic: when’s the last time you carved your honey’s initials into a lawn chair?
Basically, it’s the Swiss Army Knife of seating.
The Build (without giving you hives over measurements)
I know you want the step-by-step instructions with all the lumber cuts and screw sizes. But here’s the thing: I don’t want you to hate me when your bench wobbles because I mis-typed 3/16ths of an inch.
Instead, I’m going to give you the SparkNotes version:
Grab your lumber and screws.
Build two simple frames for the sides.
Add a seat.
Add a backrest.
Sit down, sip a cold drink, and marvel at your handiwork.
(In case yours doesn’t look like mine: these are being used at a daycare, so I added a roundover to all of the edges with a trim router, then sanded it thoroughly to eliminate any rogue slivers or sharp edges hurting little hands or feet)

Finishing Touches
Sure, you could just leave your wood bench “au naturel” and let it weather into that silvery-grey “farmhouse chic” look. But if you want extra credit, you can:
- Paint it black for a modern edge.
- Stain it cedar for a classic backyard vibe.
- Seal it so it outlasts your toddlers stories.
- Add a plaque to commemorate a pet.
- Give 3 year-olds chalk and let them create the aesthetic.
Final Thoughts
If you can handle a drill and a saw without losing digits, you can absolutely build this wooden bench. It’s affordable, practical, and makes you look like the kind of person who whips out fancy furniture in minutes (even though Jamison did the heavy lifting for us).
Each bench took about 90 minutes to cut and build. At the current cost of lumber in my area (July 2025), each bench came in at roughly $80 CDN each.
Build one for the daycare, the local library, your front yard, your back yard, your side yard, your balcony, your parents… yes, I really do love it that much.
Go forth children! Terrorize the garden ants! Throw all of the sand OUT of the sandbox! Crash your little toddler cars! I’ll be right here cheering you on.
