Give inexpensive dollar store pumpkins a makeover with leftover paint. These decor-matching mini pumpkins make a pretty fall display without an expensive shopping trip.
The Dollar Store is one of my favourite places to buy materials to knock-off more expensive decor – case in point, painting these dollar store pumpkins is something that I do each year as my tastes and colour schemes change.
I mean really, does anyone really keep these dollar store pumpkins in the original colours?
I think they are actually manufactured to be hideous so that people WILL paint them.
Each of these little bags was $2 and contained 4-5 pumpkins, some pinecones and a few acorns. I wanted to fill a dish with these mini pumpkins, so I bought 4 bags for a whopping $8.
An inexpensive dollar store pumpkin makeover
What you’ll need
- Faux mini pumpkins or gourds from the dollar store
- Leftover paint or craft paint in your chosen colours
- A small paintbrush
- A dish, bowl, or tray for displaying your painted pumpkins
- Optional: faux leaves, pinecones, and acorns to fill the gaps
How to paint dollar store pumpkins
The process is simple – just paint your minis with leftover paint or dollar store paint in whatever colours you choose to showcase this Fall.
Start with clean, dry pumpkins and test your paint on the underside of one first. Different faux pumpkins have different finishes, so it’s worth checking that your paint sticks before tackling the whole bag.
Brush on a thin coat, let it dry according to the paint’s instructions, and add another coat if the original colour is still showing through.
I’m in a navy and gold mood for this display, so that’s what I went with.
A few white pumpkins break up the darker colours, while the gold stems and acorns tie everything together

Styling painted pumpkins for Fall
I set my dollar store pumpkins (which now look like much more expensive ones) in a wooden tray to create a Fall coffee table vignette.
I tucked a few random leaves into the mix from a dollar store branch and bought myself a few sunflowers to finish my September look.
I love sunflowers – they just scream “paint a smiley face on me!” don’t they?
You don’t need to copy my colours to get the same effect. Choose colours that work with your room, then repeat them throughout your bowl or tray. These are painted pumpkins – you can always change your mind and paint them again!
$10 and some leftover paint and I was thrilled with the results!
