Make these simple Christmas stocking tags with a bit of scrap wood, some twine and pre-cut letters from the dollar store.
How is your Holiday prep going?
I’m nearing the finish line thanks to my “100 Things 2 Do Before Christmas” checklist“. Yes, I know that seems like a promo, but this free printable really does help keep me on track so that I can actually enjoy the Holidays instead of just rushing through them. Just a few more handmade gifts to go, the pre-Christmas clean, and then Hubby takes over with Holiday groceries and cooking.
I love when it’s his turn to take over.
I just sit in my chair with a new book (I’m still trying to get Jólabókaflóð to take in Canada) and enjoy the fruits of my month-long labour.
Speaking of, one of my tasks was to create stocking tags for these super-soft, winter-white Christmas stockings I picked up (in an after-Christmas sale) last year.

I have nothing against embroidered names on Christmas stockings, but I wanted these to look warm and cozy and a bit rustic, so wooden stocking tags were definitely the way to go.

I had some leftover 1/4″ thick pieces of wood in the garage, so I cut them down to 4″ by 2″ (10cm by 5cm) and then added a 45 degree bevel on the top corners to make them look more like actual tags.
I used a dark walnut stain and coated them with a layer of Varathane triple-thick to protect them and keep the stain from rubbing off onto my stockings.

I found these pre-cut letters at the dollar store and gave them a coating of white gloss paint.
I glued the letters to each stocking tag with Gorilla Glue clear and then tied everything together with a bit of rustic twine.
Doesn’t get much easier than this!

Sweet, simple, rustic and finished – these stocking tags are wins in my pre-Christmas-prep books!

The wood cut letters came in a huge alphabet set (of about 4 of each letter) and rang in at $4. The star ornaments were $1 and the wood, twine, stain and varnish were already in my garage – so my grand total for labeling 7 Christmas stockings was a whopping $5; that’s considerably less than if I’d decided to add embroidery to each – which usually rings in around $3 Cdn per letter.

These DIY stocking tags have the added bonus of being easily removed – so when my kids drive me to the edge of insanity, I can simply undo the twine knot and remove them from Santa’s delivery system.

These stocking tags took minutes to make (not including dry-time for the stain and varnish) so you still have plenty of time to whip a few out for your own Christmas stockings, or as special gift tags on presents. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen cut-out snowflakes at the dollar store as well, so you could change these up and make tag ornaments for your tree.

I’ve got two football jersey cases to build and one more reindeer to cut and paint and then the lounging begins!
Have a great one!
